If they're sheltered you can get lots to grow in a CA winter. Our roses have bloomed 4 times this year alone (including right now), but our more exposed lavender has already gone into hibernation:)
@Mark - That's interesting. Growing up, I literally didn't know anything other than a spring garden. I'm quite excited to discover that fresh produce (beyond cabbages and broccoli) can be produced in the winter.
